Fernwood Fitness Partners with DV Safe Phone Charity Initiative
Fernwood Fitness has announced a partnership with DV Safe Phone to support the essential service they are providing to victims of domestic violence.
The not-for-profit organisation came to fruition in 2020 when Chief Executive Ashton Wood learned that the mobile phone is often one of the first items to be thrown, broken or stolen during domestic violence.
Without a phone, the victim is left cut off from the outside world with no way to call emergency services or helplines for assistance.
DV Safe Phone collects, repurposes and gifts mobile phones to victims of domestic violence (DV) through registered charities, safe houses and authorities serving this vulnerable community.
These phones are then provided as part of an individual’s ‘safe’ or ‘escape’ plan’ offering a lifeline to call for help when it’s needed most.
Not only does the initiative reduce e-waste, but it helps those that need it most.
As Wood explains “my hope is that one day, if we do our job really well, there will no longer be a need for DV Safe Phone at all.
“I look forward to this day, so that we can celebrate what we have achieved together.”
With reports of domestic violence amplified by COVID-19 and extended lockdowns, Fernwood is proud to be part of the conversation around domestic, family, and sexual violence, in a purposeful and interactive way.
By normalising these discussions, we can raise awareness, and further connect support services and victims to the resources they need to protect and save lives.
Those with spare phones to donate can visit their local Fernwood, or find their nearest DV Safe Phone donation drop-off point here using their interactive map.
Alternatively, if there aren’t any locations nearby, old phones can be posted to PO Box 1440, Mooloolaba QLD 4557.
