Club Physical Helps Combat Domestic Violence

Auckland Gym Club Physical has donated $6,000 to help women and children at New Zealand Women's Refuge Centres.

As Club Physical Chief Executive Paul Richards explains, "one in three New Zealand women experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

"NZ Women's Refuge Centres take a crisis call every eleven minutes but each year struggles for funding

"Half of all murders of NZ women are family violence related and over 2,000 children stayed in a Women's Refuge safe house in 2008 - that's around the population of eight primary schools."

Family violence offences recorded by Police increased by 31.5% last year and this was a concern to Club Physical. This led Richards to conduct a two month fundraising campaign that led to the $6,000 donation to the refuge.

As Richards adds "hearing about the plight of women and children in this situation prompted us to do this, it's important in today's economy where a lot of the traditional fundraisers have been pulling back".
