Swimmer dies at SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre
A swimmer has died at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) after being pulled from the water at the facility in Adelaide’s south yesterday afternoon.
South Australian Police and emergency services were called to the swimming centre just after 3:40pm, to reports that a person was in distress.
Subsequent reports indicated that the person had a medical episode in the water, and was pulled from a pool, before paramedics performed CPR in an attempt to resuscitate them.
A spokesperson for the YMCA Victoria (the Y Victoria), which manages SAALC on behalf of the South Australian Government, released a statement advising that the organisation and management were “saddened” by the person’s loss of life.
The statement added “we are deeply saddened by the passing of a patron at SAALC today. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones.
“Lifeguards and emergency services responded immediately. SA Police are now investigating, and we’re fully cooperating.
“We are also ensuring support is available for our staff and any community members affected by this incident.
“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will not be providing further comment at this time and appreciate your understanding.”
Daily Mail Australia advised that reporters arriving at the scene were initially denied entry to the facility.
The main competition pool at the centre remained closed to the public on Wednesday night.
SAALC’s dive/water polo pool and change rooms are currently undergoing maintenance works.
