Moreton Bay looks to become table tennis centre of excellence
City of Moreton Bay Council is set to partner with Table Tennis Queensland to become Queensland’s home of table tennis, with the recently redeveloped South Pine Indoor Sports Centre receiving Olympic grade equipment as part of a seven-year deal.
Under the agreement, the new Queensland Table Tennis Centre of Excellence will host six marquee events estimated to generate more than $6 million dollars of economic impact.
The Council has co-funded the establishment of the centre that will support Table Tennis Queensland to deliver high-performance coaching, training, pathways, and major events on new Olympic-grade tables.
Advising that the partnership to establish the Queensland Table Tennis Centre of Excellence showcased a commitment to Olympic pathways, Moreton Bay Mayor, Peter Flannery stated “City of Moreton Bay has a strong reputation as a destination for sports and major events. This new centre will shape the talent of tomorrow and add to our incredible calendar of events, while also benefiting the community by growing access and participation in sport.
“This Centre of Excellence will be only the second of its kind in Australia and its proximity to a major international airport makes our Centre an attractive destination for international and national level events and international training camps.”
The state-of-the-art South Pine Indoor Sports Centre will now feature 40 new table tennis tables, 550 court barriers and umpires’ tables.
The partnership between Council and Table Tennis Queensland will see the Queensland Junior, Senior and Veterans Closed, Queensland Open and Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships held at the South Pine Indoor Sports Centre in Brendale, Moreton Bay from 2025 to 2031.
