Moreton Bay Regional Council reveals indoor stadium plans
Moreton Bay Regional Council has revealed plans for a 7000-seat multipurpose indoor stadium that it hopes will host boxing events during the 2032 Olympic.
To be built as part of Moreton Bay’s Olympic Park, Queensland Government Priority Development Area site, Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the venue would see the area share the spotlight during Brisbane and south east Queensland’s hosting of the 2032 Olympic Games.
Mayor Flannery state “this event will be unlike anything Moreton Bay has ever seen, but if we don’t plan now we’ll miss the economic, infrastructure and promotional opportunities that 2032 will bring.
“Beyond the event itself, I want our local Olympic facility to be hosting major sporting events, concerts, and events for generations to come so that the Olympic spirit lives on forever here in Moreton Bay.
“We’ll be getting our very own Olympic Park at The Mill, Petrie with a purpose-built indoor stadium boasting at least 7,000 seats at this stage to host all Olympic boxing events.”
While designs are yet to be finalised, but Council expects it will feature at least nine multi-use courts that will be designed to not only host high-level sports competition post the Olympics but have huge legacy benefits for the broader community.
Mayor Flannery noted “it will become a cultural hub for the region and will support community events like concerts, festivals, art performances, school activities and more.
“The lasting economic benefits will be huge too with the capabilities to host exhibitions, business conferences and events, trade shows, work spaces and even potentially be used for filming opportunities like television commercials.
“With its close proximity to the University of the Sunshine Coast Petrie campus it can be used for educational activities, as well as provide a high-performance training facility for the region’s best athletes.”
Mayor Flannery said the Olympics hosting is great catalyst for the region as at continues to grow, adding “the Mill was strategically built on the Petrie railway station to help attract projects like this and support high volumes of commuters, but there is still much more that can be done over the coming years.
