Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre to host 2023 Para Badminton International
Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre has been announced as the host venue for the 2023 Para Badminton International being held from 2nd to 6th October.
The event is being managed by the Badminton Association of WA, working closely with the local disability sector. The Association delivers para badminton programs for people living with a disability to play on both a social and competitive basis.
More than 200 of the world's best players from India, China, Malaysia, Canada, Denmark, Indonesia, and more will compete across six different classifications, including wheelchair, standing lower, standing upper and short stature.
Para badminton is now recognised as a Paralympic sport, debuting at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The Para Badminton International will form part of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualification, where athletes gain points towards the Paralympic Ranking List.
In the past two years the Western Australian Government has provided more than $187,000 in funding to the Badminton Association of WA - through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries' grant programs.
WA Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman notes "it is wonderful news that my home city, Mandurah, has been chosen to host the 2023 Para Badminton International.
"Para badminton is a fast-growing, and safe sport for people with disability. This event will showcase some of the best players in the world and show what is possible at an elite level.”
