Roof repairs at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre to cost more than $2 million and close pool for more than a year

The City of Mandurah has revealed it could take 16 months and $2.5 million to repair the damaged roof structure over the 25 metre indoor pool at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

As reported today by the Mandurah Coastal Times, the council is to consider two repair options, having first become aware of damage to the facility’s roof in May.

The affected section of the roof - isolated to the area directly above the indoor program pool - was part of the Centre’s original roof structure before its 2016 redevelopment.

A structural engineer investigated the damage and advised it was caused by a break in a section of the roof structure, probably caused by excessive loading from inclement weather or a similar event.

The engineer’s findings have been independently reviewed.

Based on the advice of two structural engineering consultants, council officers are recommending that the council decides to completely remove and replace the roof structure over the 25 metre pool.

It is estimated the complete removal and replacement of the existing roof structure would cost $2.5 million and take at least 16 months to complete because of the current high demand in the Western Australia construction industry and availability of materials.

The officials are recommending that the funding be covered through existing reserves.

The City’s insurer is still reviewing the claim to determine whether the damage is insurable.

Once the council has made a decision on how to progress, a timeline for the repair works and re-opening of the pool will be developed.
