Federal Sports Minister backs Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre redevelopment

Federal Minister for Sport Kate Lundy has backed the redevelopment of the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Built in 1982 and expanded over its two decades of operations, the Centre attracts in excess of 600,000 people.

The City of Mandurah has submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) to apply for funding for the next stage of development, which in two stages will include a 50 metre outdoor pool, a new leisure pool, refurbishment of the existing 25 metre pool and indoor sports halls, through the Federal Government's Regional Development Australia Fund.

The EOI was successful and the City of Mandurah will now proceed to full application.

Speaking during a visit to the facility on 28th March, Senator Lundy (pictured) stated "I want to congratulate the City of Mandurah for raising the funds for ... this important redevelopment project.

"As well as drawing people from Mandurah, this Centre also attracts people from Rockingham, Pinjarra, and south to Dawesville which is great for the local economy.

"Great recreation facilities make communities strong and it's terrific to see so many people taking the opportunity to enjoy an active healthy lifestyle in Mandurah and the surrounding area.

The architects for stage one were appointed last December with works due to start in late 2013.
