Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre first stage redevelopment gets official opening

The long awaited grand opening of stage 1 of the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre redevelopment has been marked by a community day of free activities including swimming, come and try classes, exhibitions and water polo.

The official opening of the $38 million redevelopment was held on Sunday (27th September) with Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett undertaking the official duties.

The stage one redevelopment includes a 50 metre Myrtha Pool with movable boom and entry ramp, a new leisure pool and aquatic play feature, and refurbishment of the facility’s 25 metre pool existing using Myrtha Renovaction technology.

The project also uses geothermal heating and an all new filtration system utilising sand filters and pool hydraulics.

Work on the project was undertaken by Perkins Builders and Commercial Aquatics Australia.

Commenting on the development, Premier Barnett stated “the State Government recognises the importance of grassroots community sporting and recreation facilities and that's why we continue to invest in them.

"This state-of-the-art centre is located in one of Western Australia's fastest growing regions and is expected to attract about 650,000 visitors each year, so it's essential there is a modern, safe facility large enough to cater for the community's needs."

The redevelopment is being undertaken in two stages, totalling $38 million. The project received $13.5 million in Western Australian Government funding - $11 million through Royalties for Regions and $2.5 million from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).

Stage two of the development will include construction of new indoor sports courts, gymnasium, creche, change rooms and fitness centre. Development is expected to start in January 2016.
