Canberra Tennis Centre gets official opening
The $10.5 million Canberra Tennis Centre at Lyneham, a facility that represents an exciting new era for tennis in the ACT, has received its official opening.
Redevelopment of the tennis facilities on this site, adjacent to the former National Sports Club and opposite the National Hockey Centre, had been discussed for well over a decade prior to Tennis ACT entering into redevelopment partnership with Next Gen Clubs.
The subsequent two-year redevelopment has delivered a facility offering eight hard courts, four synthetic grass courts, 12 tier one European clay courts, four children’s ANZ Hot shots courts, as well as an indoor tennis centre with four hard courts.
The ACT Government invested $7.15 million into the $27 million cost of the combined Canberra Tennis Centre/Next Gen Canberra project, while also supporting a number of leasing changes that were necessary to support Tennis ACT’s broader redevelopment partnership with Next Gen Clubs.
Now fully operational, the Canberra Tennis Centre is providing improved opportunities for coaching, junior programs and elite development, while also allowing the ACT to resume a prominent place on the Australian tennis events calendar, commencing with this November’s Canberra International.
Commenting on the project, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr stated “for local athletes this facility provides a wonderful training environment, while also attracting a raft of events that will help our next generation to gain more experience and important ranking points right here, in their own backyard.
“What has been achieved here over the last 12 months is testament to the tenacity of Tennis ACT in pursuing every avenue to achieve their vision for this site and demonstrates the value of what can be achieved through partnerships.
“I’d like to thank Tennis Australia and Next Generation Clubs for recognising the opportunities that can exist through investment in our city.”
