New National Badminton Centre set to open in Western Sydney
The National Badminton Centre, which has operated a successful multi-court badminton facility in Silverwater since 2013, is set to open a second centre in the Sydney suburb of Seven Hills in the coming weeks.
Tapping into a growing interest in badminton, the new 11 court facility is housed in a converted warehouse and is currently awaiting Blacktown City Council to provide its Occupation Certificate so it can begin commercial operations.
Converted at a cost of $600,000 the facility features Decoflex court surfaces approved to Badminton World Federation Grade 1 International Elite flooring standard, installed by Dynamic Sports Facilities.
National Badminton Centre Manager Michael Chen explains “this new facility will cater for increasing demand for badminton courts in an area of Sydney where the demographic has a love of the sport.”
Chen adds that while badminton is particularly popular among people with origins in South and East Asia, with around 10,000 participants in Sydney it draws participation from across all ethnicities.
Cited in a fast growing area of Sydney, Chen is confident that the new privately funded facility will thrive.
With badmintion having been an Olympic sport since 1992, the National Badminton Centre is keen to promote elite performance and its Silverwater facility has been the training base for state and national champions, and has backed competitors representing Australia in international championships.
