Yamba Skate Park upgrade creates premier skateboarding destination
The northern NSW coastal town of Yamba is now home to one of Australia’s premier skateboarding destinations following the completion of the Yamba Skate Park upgrade.
Clarence Valley Council awarded a $575,000 contract to Concrete Skateparks to complete the Yamba skate park, courtesy of a $500,000 Federal Government Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Fund Round 2 grant.
The revamped skate park, in the heart of Yamba, is now more than 1000 square metres bigger than the original skate park to cater for the ever-growing popularity of skateboarding and roller sports in Yamba.
The diverse skatepark has features that will entertain most skaters for days on end and include a long mini ramp with extensions and traditional steel coping; a fun mini ramp with a lot of variety; an extensive street section with a number of obstacles including stairs, banks, ledges, quarters and pump just to name a few.
The final design was borne out of the vision and passion of the Yamba Skate Working Crew - a committee established in 2020 and made up of Council representatives, community members and skaters to reinvigorate the space and create a design generated from the heart and soul of the community.
There is also improved shaded seating areas, hang out spaces, landscaped gardens with local palms, native grasses and shrubs, and improved pedestrian access.
The centrally located skate park is surrounded by a newly upgraded playground and also sporting fields and will likely help further invigorate Yamba, attracting locals and tourists to the CBD. It is set to become a cultural hub for local skateboarders and visitors alike while offering skate enthusiasts a premier facility never seen before in the Clarence Valley.
Clarence Valley Council Manager Open Spaces and Facilities Peter Birch enthused “this upgrade is an exciting addition to the Clarence Valley’s busiest skate park.
"It now not only has such a diverse range of new obstacles, ramps, stairs, rails, flats, and lots of fun, creativity-inspired skateable elements, but also boasts a super advanced and fast three-metre deep clover-style bowl to rival any skate park on the east coast of Australia."
The official opening will be held at the facility on the corner of Coldstream Street and River Street on Saturday, 30th July from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
There will be a Welcome to Country, live music, DJs, skateboarding demos, a ‘skate bowl jam’ competition, food and coffee vans, plus heaps of prizes and free giveaways. It is a free community event and Federal and State MPs and local councillors will be in attendance.
