Construction to begin on new Cochrane Park Skate Park in Koo Wee Rup

Cardinia Shire Council has advised that construction is set to begin next week on the new Cochrane Park Skate Park in Koo Wee Rup.

The skate park has been designed and will be constructed by premier skate park builders Grind Projects, in partnership with Baseplate, the designer for the popular Gembrook skate park in 2018.

The final design was prepared based on feedback received during a number of rounds of community consultation.

Council officers attended Koo Wee Rup Primary School where an overwhelming positive response was received from 200 grade 3 - 6 children.

The new skatepark will offer a ‘combination’ style facility that caters for all user types and skill levels while ensuring it is not crammed with too many elements. The mini ramp design is not just a back-and-forth movement, it allows users to flow around it with a semi-bowl like feel that can lead to the street run for additional function and transfers.

To ensure further diversity, the skatepark includes:

  • a long street run that features various elements like bank ramps, rails, ledges, split level, manual pad.

  • differing heights/complexity of elements to encourage use by beginners. This was a common request by local users.

  • areas around the elements to allow for ample open space where users can practice their basic skills before taking it to the elements.

  • elevated areas that can accommodate future seating and shared zones between the adjoining facilities.

The skatepark retains connections to existing infrastructure including paths, and basketball court to further encourage both active and passive use. No existing vegetation will be removed.

As Council commenced the site preparation and demolition of the existing skate park during the community consultation period, the construction phase will commence from next week.

The project is anticipated to be completed towards the end of June 2022.
