Tender award for Williamina Sports Ground in Narangba features a green boost

Moreton Bay Regional Council has awarded a $790,000 tender to local company Auzcon IP Pty Ltd to give Williamina Sports Ground in Narangba a green boost by building a new naturalised waterway and wetland.

Williamina Sports Ground is a popular facility for many local clubs and families in the area, however the site also has a significant overland flow path that drains a 58-hectare catchment. Currently an existing concrete drain runs to a small pond next to Oakey Flat Road, and the pond is full of sediment and prone to outbreaks of aquatic weeds.

By building a new wetland planted with native vegetation, it will help capture sediment and nutrients contained within stormwater and improve the water quality of the downstream waterways.

The new wetland will be a low maintenance self-sustaining green infrastructure that improves biodiversity in the local area.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway said this project was a win for both the environment and the community and advised “we are building this new natural channel and wetland to improve the water quality in the local area and the overall health of our region’s waterways.

“I hear loud and clear from locals that Council needs to enforce stronger environmental protection, so this is a great example of how we’re ’Going Green as we Grow’ in the face of a booming population.

“Wetlands are unique and biologically diverse systems that improve water quality and provide refuge for our threatened and endangered species.

Acting Mayor Shipway added that the new wetland will “reduce pollutants in our waterways, complementing the work we do to restore drains and repair the vegetation along the creek banks to help us better manage and improve the health of the ecosystem.”

Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) welcomed this announcement, saying it would offer a great range of benefits including improvements to water quality in the Burpengary Creek Catchment.

“This project will boost the ecological health of the local area so more people can enjoy the natural environment and wildlife that rely on the wetlands to thrive.

“From our Land Buyback program to Green Infrastructure Network project, this is just another initiative showcasing Council’s efforts to preserve and enhance the environment of Moreton Bay and our commitment to greening as we grow.

“We are so fortunate to have hundreds of hectares of national parks, wildlife reserves and corridors right on our doorstep, so it’s vital that we continue our efforts to preserve the natural beauty of our region.”

Construction of this project will commence in April 2022, and is scheduled to take 16 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
