Sunbather saves Devonport Aquatic Centre $67,000 in gas heating costs

By installing state-of-the-art thermal pool blankets, the recently opened Splash Devonport Aquatic Centre will be making significant savings on its operating costs and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.

Opened in January, the $14 million regional aquatic centre features two large Olympic-sized pools, hydrotherapy and soak warm-water pools, indoor and outdoor splashpads for children and a refurbished waterslide.

During the four year development process, Devonport City Council contributed $4 million to the facility, the Federal and Tasmanian Governments each pitching in $5 million each for the new facility.

However, beyond the funding of the building, all involved with the project were mindful of the need to reduce operating costs.

With that in mind, Sunbather Pool Technologies worked with the project worked consultants, engineers and builders to install 10 separate 4mm thick Sunbather thermal blankets covering over 600 metres2 of aquatic space. Seven of these thermal blankets are deployed using automatic wall mounted remote rollers.

The result will see the new facility reduced its gas heating bills by $67,000 a year and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 1,428 tonnes.

Commenting on the project, Project Specifier David Powick stated "Sunbather pool covers were chosen to minimize energy and water losses overnight when the indoor pools are not in use and to minimize staff input for safe operation. Sunbather were chosen because of their known quality, long experience, and good customer service."

Sunbather Commercial Sales executive Pam Robinson addeds "we love these challenging jobs, as no one else in the country is equipped with our expertise and engineering experience to deliver such a high standard of results."

VOS Constructions Project Manager/Estimator Steve Hardy also commended Sunbather, concluding "I have found Sunbather a highly organised and co-operative company to work with.

"Good communication and an eye for detail enabled the manufacture and installation of the pool covers to proceed without incident and within the programmed time frame. I am more than happy to recommend Sunbather for any future projects."
