General Ticket Sale for Rugby World Cup 2011

Following completion of the second round of the ticket application process of the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 ticketing programme, a limited number of individual tickets are now on sale.

The process requires no applications, with tickets available on a first in, first served basis.

The general sale of RWC 2011 tickets will close on Friday 21st January.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 is considering allowing a secondary market for World Cup tickets aimed at consumers who change their minds about attending matches. The proposed platform would allow sold tickets to change hands on a legal basis up to three months before the tournament.

The proposal is still at planning stage with details to be finalised later this year. One option under debate is to use an existing platform, such as online auction site TradeMe or marketplace Ticketek New Zealand, to control the resale process.

There is no precedent for the official resale of tickets at any Rugby World Cup but secondary marketplaces have been used successfully at other big sporting events including the Superbowl in the US.

However, under current New Zealand law, people selling their tickets can't do so for any more than face value under the Major Events Management Act.
