South Australia secures further major swimming events

The South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre will host a third consecutive Olympic Trials for Swimming Australia as part of deal that will see Adelaide host five national swimming events over the next three years.

The events, which also include the 2018 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships at Brighton Beach, were announced today by South Australian Assistant Minister for Recreation and Sport Katrine Hildyard and Swimming Australia Director Nicole Livingstone.

The events are:

• 2018 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships
• 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Trials
• 2019 Australian Swimming Championships
• 2019 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships
• 2020 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials (Olympic Qualifier)

Secured through the South Australian Government’s Major Events Bid Fund, it is estimated the five upcoming meets will attract more than 8,500 visitors to Adelaide and will generate $16.7 million in economic benefit for South Australia.

Commenting on securing the events, Assistant Minister Hildyard stated “we are absolutely thrilled to have secured these five events to enable continued development of swimming in South Australia.

“Events inject millions into our growing $6.3 billion visitor economy and to secure five national swimming events is a major coup.

“We have invested $70 million in additional tourism funding in the past two years to market South Australia nationally and internationally and attract major events.”
