OCBC Aquatic Centre at the heart of Singapore’s aquatic community

Approaching nearly two years of operations, the OCBC Aquatic Centre is becoming an increasingly popular location for both elite aquatic sport and community programs in Singapore.

Part of the Singapore Sports Hub, the world-class aquatic centre is used by both the general public and Singapore’s elite athletes on a daily basis.

Committed to the Sports Hub’s vision of community participation it offers the Swimsafer (learn to swim program for children aged six to 12 years), adult learn to swim programs, aqua fitness classes (including aqua prenatal classes, aqua aerobics, aqua tabata and deepwater aqua jogging and aqua exercise bike classes available.

As an elite venue the OCBC Aquatic Centre’s event calendar has seen it play host to premier international and national swimming competitions welcoming some of the world’s top swimmers.

International events have included the 2014 Southeast Asian Swimming Championships, 2014 Prudential Swim Stars 2014, 2014 & 2015 FINA World Cup, 2015 FINA World Jr Championship, 2015 FINA Diving Grand Prix and the 2015 Southeast Asian Games & ASEAN Para Games.

Local events have included the Singapore National Age championships, the Ministry of Education – Youth Celebrate! Event and the Singapore National Games.

The coming month will also be a busy period for the venue, hosting the 12th Singapore National Swimming Championships (from 24rd to 26th June, the 6th Singapore National Diving Championships (2nd and 3rd July) and 18th ASEAN University Games (from 10th to 19th June).

In looking to develop elite swimmers, Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) and the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) recently collaborated to hold a four-day residential camp for National Training Centre (NTC) swimmers, and 10 promising youngsters who are not part of the set-up.

With 10 club coaches and officials in attendance, the junior development camp, which featured seminars on areas like nutrition and sports psychology, marked the start of SSA's plan to increase outreach with affiliate clubs and the Singapore Sports School.

To help manage the venue on a day-to-day basis, Sports Hub hires experienced staff within the industry and often athletes who want to progress onto the next stage of their career, including ex-Singapore national backstroke swimmer, Lynette Ng.

Ng not only has the knowledge of managing a world-class venue, but also knows what it’s like to compete in one, which gives her a unique perspective and in-depth skillset.

She explains “going from a national swimmer to now running the world-class OCBC Aquatic Centre is a dream come true. I know how much time and dedication elite swimmers have to give each day, and now I get to continue my passion by working behind the scenes to ensure they have the optimal training environment.

“This opportunity would not have been possible without Sports Hub.”

Able to seat 6,000, the OCBC Aquatic Centre includes two 50-metre pools for competition and training and a five-metre deep diving pool.
