Gymnastics Australia and Singapore Gymnastics look to build leadership capacities for women in sport

Following Australia's most decorated gymnast, Lauren Mitchell, contesting the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne last week, former rival - 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Singapore’s Lim Heem Wei - is preparing to meet Gymnastics Australia on her home soil.

Now retired from competing, Wei will attend the inaugural ‘Building Leadership Capacity of Women in Sport Conference’ in Singapore from 11th to 14th June.

The conference will be facilitated by Gymnastics Australia in collaboration with Singapore Gymnastics and South East Asian Gymnastics Zone. The project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-ASEAN Council (AAC) of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Singapore’s first Olympic gymnast Wei stood beside Australia’s Lauren Mitchell to accept her Commonwealth Games Silver medal in 2010. In June, Wei will again stand beside Australians at the conference where Women will participate in Leadership, Governance, Coach and Judge training. They will be matched with mentors from Australia, Singapore and South East Asia and the project will be evaluated by Victoria University.

Experts from Australia will work with participants from a range of experience levels with the goal to empower women as leaders in sport. Keynote speakers, panellists and presenters include the President of Gymnastics Australia, representatives from the Australian High Commission, International Judges, and leading Singaporean business women. Training will also be provided to Singapore Gymnastics staff and volunteers to build the capacity of the workforce to deliver quality coach and judge education. Lim Heem Wei, already a role model to young Singaporean gymnasts will gain skills and knowledge that will be of benefit within and beyond the gymnasium.
