Installation completed of Darwin’s new outdoor fitness stations
The City of Darwin has completed the installation of six new outdoor fitness stations on Casuarina Drive in Nightcliff.
The existing exercise equipment was more than 10 years old and has been replaced with 27 new stations and equipment components.
Community consultation undertaken in 2019 highlighted that the community wanted to retain the trail of outdoor exercise equipment and wanted more variety.
Drawing Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis advised “this new equipment has delivered exactly what the community has asked for.
“This project sees six different outdoor fitness locations along beautiful Nightcliff foreshore, offering more variety, more exercise stations and larger exercise spaces.
“Being outdoors and keeping fit has become even more popular during COVID-19, and a week on from restrictions being lifted on using outdoor exercise equipment, City of Darwin has been able to open these wonderful new facilities for the community to enjoy.
“I’d like to thank the local contractors, Hardy Landscaping who have worked so hard to finish this project.”
Juggernaut Fitness Director, Stephanie Jeanes is also excited to see the new equipment installed and adds “the new equipment caters for a range of ages and abilities. Some stations provide seated exercise options and others control the range of movement, giving options for all members of the community to safely exercise.”
“Anyone with a passion for keeping fit and healthy will really enjoy using this new equipment - and there is the bonus of the Nightcliff foreshore location.”
The project cost $200,000 and all 27 different exercise stations are available for use by the community at any time. During the COVID-19 response users of the exercise equipment are asked to adhere to social distancing and ensure equipment is cleaned following use.
City of Darwin is developing a series of videos with Jeanes to demonstrate how to use the equipment correctly. These will be available on City of Darwin’s website and designed to be used on a mobile device.
