Darwin invests in major local projects

City of Darwin is investing $2.13 million in seven major projects across the city which will be completed or well underway by the end of the 2020/21 financial year.

The projects include upgrades to the iconic Gardens Amphitheatre, new exercise equipment at Nightcliff Foreshore, a half-court basketball facility and new toilet facilities at Jingili Water Gardens, Bicentennial Park, Rapid Creek and Cullen Bay.

The projects will generate employment opportunities and support the local economy as the city responds to COVID-19.

The Gardens Amphitheatre will undergo a significant facelift, expected to cost in the vicinity of $600,000, focusing on providing stage access for people of all abilities and increasing the load capacity of the stage floor.

Tenders for work on the toilet facilities have been awarded and the tender for the Amphitheatre is due to close today (17th April). Local businesses are given priority in this process.

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis advises “the Gardens Amphitheatre has been hosting events for nearly 50 years.

“As custodians of this unique venue we have a responsibility to ensure it can continue to host local, national and international events into the future.

“As we respond to COVID-19 City of Darwin’s focus is on continuing to provide essential services and invest in capital works across the City.”

“This upgrade will provide the Darwin community with a beautiful venue to continue to enjoy.”

The tender process for Gardens Amphitheatre is expected to take four weeks, with works to commence soon after.
