Darwin Council commences major upgrade of sport oval lighting
City of Darwin has commenced major works at Gardens Oval as part of the Sporting Oval Lighting Upgrades project, which is delivering lighting at major sporting ovals across Darwin.
Bagot and Nightcliff Ovals are also part of the $2.8 million project, being delivered by local contractor ESPEC PH, in line with City of Darwin’s focus on supporting local businesses.
The Urban Oval Lighting Project is a collaboration between two levels of government, with the Northern Territory Government funding the project and City of Darwin project managing and delivering the project.
The Project aims to increase opportunities for the community to participate in sport.
Darwin Lord Mayor Vatskalis advises “this is a significant project and a reflection on how, when two levels of government work together, great outcomes are produced for our community.
“It is critical that during this difficult time, while we respond to COVID-19, that major projects like this continue as they employ locals and support our economy.”
The Darwin community is supportive of the project, with community consultation showing 94% of survey respondents backing the project.
Lord Mayor Vatskalis added “once complete this project will enable sports training and matches to be played at cooler times of the day and provide opportunities for increased participation.”
