High Hopes for Port Hedland in Western Australian park awards

The rebuilding of Marapikurrinya Park and technological advancements in irrigation control are Town of Port Hedland initiatives that have been nominated in this year’s Parks and Leisure Australia WA Awards of Excellence.

These awards recognise the work of individuals and organisations who contribute to parks and recreation facilities in communities across Western Australia.

The 2018 edition of the Awards has seen the Town of Port Hedland nominated in two categories: The Playspace Award for the rebuilding of Marapikurrinya Playground, and the Best Use of Technology Award for using technology to improve service delivery in the community.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said the nominations recognise the hard work and vision of the Town, commenting “after the arson attack in 2015, the Town consulted heavily with the community and rebuilt Marapikurrinya Park into a more innovative and accessible facility.

“The addition of accessibility ramps for wheelchairs and prams, an accessible carousel and the nautical playground design suitable for a cross-section of ages means the park it better than ever.

“For both locals and tourists, the park has become a central place in Town to play, relax and unwind since its reopening in June 2017.

“In recent years, the Town has also taken steps to integrate more technology to improve service delivery.

“In particular, the installation of the Smartpark Control System has improved efficiency by enabling more irrigation control, flood light control, automatic fertilising and power monitoring.”

Award winners will be announced on Thursday 21st June.
