Council to offer support to lifeguards after near drowning at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
The City of Gold Coast has advised that support is being offered to the lifeguards involved in helping to save the life of a man following a near-drowning at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
The man, aged in his 30s, was pulled from a pool at the Southport facility around 1pm on Tuesday.
As reported by myGC, a City of Gold Coast spokesperson advised that lifeguards performed CPR on the man until emergency crews arrived on scene.
The spokesperson stated “Gold Coast Aquatic Centre lifeguards administered CPR on a patron who became unconscious during an informal user group session in one of our pools.
“The man was revived by the lifeguards who continued to offer first aid until paramedics arrived.
“City officers assisted paramedics and police at the scene.”
Initially listed as being in a serious but stable condition, the man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where, as of Wednesday he was in a stable condition.
In April this year, City of Gold Coast aquatic facilities were awarded Royal Life Saving Society - Australia’s Bronze and Silver Pool Safety awards, becoming the first aquatic and recreation facilities in Queensland to be recognised as achieving a high level of safety within their aquatic facility operations.
The facilities endorsed under the program included the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre along with the Pimpama Sports Hub, Upper Coomera Aquatic Centre, Helensvale Aquatic Centre, Miami Aquatic Centre and Nerang Aquatic Centre.
