AUSTSWIM to mark World Drowning Prevention Day with discounted courses for new teachers

In response to critical teacher shortages and lack of access to swimming lessons for Australians, AUSTSWIM is to mark Monday’s World Drowning Prevention Day by discounting its courses.

AUSTSWIM is committed to raising awareness around drowning prevention through the teaching of vital swimming and water safety skills and aims to recruit and educate as many new teachers in the sector as possible.

World Drowning Prevention Day, being held on Monday 25th July, this year has the theme ‘do one thing’, with the aim of advancing efforts to prevent drowning.

The need to reduce drownings results is highlighted by a World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that 235,600 people died from drowning globally in 2019 - almost 650 every day, or 26 every hour, a silent epidemic of preventable deaths.

To assist in the aims of World Drowning Prevention Day, AUSTSWIM is offering selected AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety courses across the country for just $299 this August.

Explaining the move, AUSTSWIM Chief Executive, Bradley Low advises “our focus is on educating as many new teachers as we can, ensuring that children all across the country have access to swimming and water safety classes delivered by knowledgeable and experienced teachers who have been trained to the highest quality standards.

“Swim schools across the country are operating at capacity and with not enough accredited and licensed teachers, they are turning away families. AUSTSWIM Licenced Teachers are the lifeblood of swimming and water safety programs and have been so for the past 42 years.

“Their employment and engagement are critical, resulting in more Australians participating in swimming and water safety lessons which will help reduce the number of preventable drownings and water-related injuries.”

AUSTSWIM is launching its 'Summer Teachers are made in Winter' initiative, giving candidates the chance to complete all requirements and be fully licensed to teach a skill for life as an AUSTSWIM Teacher and support the current demand and staff shortages in time for summer.

AUSTSWIM advise “do one thing for drowning prevention, become an AUSTSWIM teacher this August and join the lifeblood of swimming and water safety programs across Australia.”
