City Venue Management takes on operations at Townsville's Tobruk Memorial Baths

Townsville's Tobruk Memorial Baths will enter a new era as City Venue Management (CVM) takes over operations from long-time lessee Luc Senent on 1st July.

Senent, a well known figure in the Townsville swimming community, has been at the helm of the facility for over 30 years building on a lifelong connection to the pool which began as a child learning to swim in its waters.

Over the years, he has coached thousands of Townsville’s youth - including elite athletes such as Libby Lenton, Max Fegan, Alyesa Koenen and Elle Armit - leaving an indelible mark on generations of swimmers.

Senent explained “Tobruk Pool is a Townsville icon. Its beauty, location, and family-friendly vibe make it truly special. While I’ll miss aspects of the old pool I grew up with, the renovations have brought a new energy to this much-loved venue.”

CVM Chief Executive Jay Clarke paid tribute to Luc and the Senent family for their enduring contribution, commenting “we’re proud to carry on the strong local spirit Luc and the Senent family have built at Tobruk Pool.

“Their passion and commitment have shaped a vibrant, connected community, and we’re incredibly grateful for the legacy they leave behind. We’re excited about the future and the opportunity to introduce programs that bring people together - whether through Learn to Swim, squad development, aqua fitness, lap swimming or therapy and recovery programs. We’re here to grow what already makes this pool special and look forward to connecting with the local community.”

This handover also marks an exciting further expansion for CVM into North Queensland, following their successful lease acquisition of Northern Beaches Leisure Centre earlier this year.

With its prime location along The Strand and a rich history, Tobruk Memorial Baths is more than just a swimming facility - it’s a community landmark. CVM is committed to building on that legacy by delivering inclusive, vibrant and community-first aquatic anfacd leisure programs.

Townsville acting Mayor and Divisional Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney acknowledged Luc’s long standing contribution, adding “Luc is practically part of the furniture at Tobruk Pool. Over the last 34 years, he’s taught Townsville to swim. His passion, knowledge and community spirit are invaluable, and we’re thrilled he’ll remain involved as a coach. Council looks forward to working closely with City Venue Management to ensure Tobruk continues to thrive.”
