Work commences on redevelopment of Townsville’s Tobruk Memorial Baths

Work on Townsville City Council’s $11.3 million redevelopment of the Tobruk Memorial Baths has commenced.

The historic pool - which has been one of Townsville’s principal swimming spots for nearly 70 years - closed from Monday 12th August as the much-needed facelift commenced.

The first stage of the redevelopment includes draining the pool, surveying and inspecting the tiles and recording the features to be sure the redevelopment complies with the heritage requirements.

Following from that a new 50 metre pool and toddler pool will be built. Along with refurbished toilets and showers, a new shade structure and an updated filtration system.

The new 50 metre pool will be larger than the existing pool with eight lanes, a wet deck and disabled access ramp.

The upgrade project is part of Townsville City Council’s $409.1 million infrastructure and capital spend in the 2019/20 Budget.

Commenting on the works, Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker stated “Council is investing in important public facilities that support the great lifestyle we enjoy in Townsville.

“Tobruk Memorial Baths are not just an important part of history to Townsville but to the Australian swimming community and that is why Council is invested in restoring the pools.

“Some of Australia’s best athletes like Dawn Fraser and Laurie Lawrence swam here and we want residents and visitors to continue enjoying the pools well into the future.”

Work is being carried out by local contractor Jackson + Semler.
