Australian Fitness Network marks 30 years

The 2017 FILEX fitness convention has seen the Australian Fitness Network mark 30 years of operations.

From the opening sessions of FILEX, the 1987 initiative of Dr Garry Egger, Greg Hurst and current Australian Fitness Network Executive Director Nigel Champion in founding what was then known as the Fitness Leader Network has been promoted and praised.

Initially providing training course and music for exercise, as well as acting as de-facto industry peak body, the organisation evolved into the Australian Fitness Network in 1999, a name that Nigel Champion explains reflected “the expansion of the industry from consisting purely of fitness instructors, to encompassing all areas of fitness, from facility owners and managers, to gym instructors and personal trainers.”

The founding trio were later joined by exercise therapist Lisa Champion.

Today, Australian Fitness Network has a mission statement to be the leading source of information, education and events in fitness.

On the Network website, Nigel Champion states “we strive to provide you with innovative, inspiring and valuable membership benefits to help you remain motivated, focused and challenged in your fitness career.

At Network we strive every day working towards our core purpose, which is the why we exist in the first place. Every course we run, convention we host or article we write is done considering the following: ‘To inform, inspire and educate our members to be the best they can be!’”

Professor Garry Egger, founder of the GutBusters program, has become acknowledged as one of Australia’s leading authority on lifestyle and chronic disease.  It was Professor Egger’s contact with Nigel Champion in the early 1980s that led to the creation of the Fitness Leader Network.

A pioneer in the Australian fitness industry, Greg Hurst is Chairman and Director of the Australian Institute of Fitness.

Lisa Champion is a successful presenter, author and counsellor.
