Activists Rally for Resorts World Sentosa dolphin release
Environmental activists have staged a concert in Singapore to protest against 25 dolphins being held in captivity in advance of their transfer to Resorts World Sentosa's new oceanarium.
Resorts World Sentosa is training the animals before moving them to its Marine Life Park - planned as the world's largest oceanarium and set to be the home to 100,000 marine animals.
Louis Ng of the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society states "it's almost a hypocrisy to say we're going to catch these dolphins from the wild, contribute to one of the threats, and then use them to try and save dolphins. It doesn't make any sense, it is a big contradiction."
The Society says the dolphins are being held in confined spaces.
However, Resorts World Sentosa says its enclosures meet international safety regulations with spokeswoman Krist Boo stating that the dolphins are kept for conservation and educational purposes.
Boo explained "it is a century-long debate and I think while there are different camps and there are divergent views, on how you should conserve a species, propagate a species. I think right now different people have agreed to disagree."
