AALARA 2017 to feature key sessions on critical incident management

With the attractions industry have experienced a number of high profile critical incidents in recent months, one of the key themes of the upcoming Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association (AALARA) annual conference will be on preparing organisations for what they need to do in such situations.

Two major sessions at the conference will see representatives from Sparke Helmore Lawyers address the management of critical incidents.

The first session, Timing is Crucial, will see Sparke Helmore Partner and risk management expert Matthew Smith present on preparedness to deal with the first 48 hours following an incident.

Smith will explore the effective management of critical incidents, with an emphasis on key legal safety considerations, covering what effective incident management looks like; what to expect in the first five minutes, 10 minutes, hour, day and 48 hours following an incident; how to meet safety obligations from a legal perspective; understanding the fundamentals of investigations, including effective evidence collation and regulator management; and mitigating legal risk.

In the second session, Sparke Helmore will present an exciting court simulation picking up on a mock incident scenario.

Smith along with fellow Sparke Helmore Partner Carlie Holt and other members of Sparke Helmore’s workplace safety team will explain the before, during and after of a work health and safety prosecution; the trial process and the ramifications of certain answers given by witnesses.

The court simulation will include the Prosecution outlining the case against the Defendant, cross-examination of witnesses by a prosecutor and closing submissions from both sides.  We will have a ‘judge’ comment on the evidence and deliver  a ‘judgment’ with reasons outlining why the case was decided a certain way.

Introducing the presentations, Sparke Helmore’s Carlie Holt explains “you only have to turn on the news to be reminded of the importance of total vigilance when it comes to safety and knowing what to do if your organisation suffers a critical incident.

“Our sessions will show how to prepare for and face such incidents, with the mock trial giving the audience a glimpse of what happens in a court room away from the news.”

Being held on the Gold Coast from 15th to 18th May, the AALARA industry conference and its two-day trade show will showcase all that its best about Australia and New Zealand’s, attractions industry with a series of sector leading presentations, workshops, site tours and social events.
