$22.2 million Aquatic Recreation Centre opens in Gympie
The community of Gympie celebrated the opening of its new $22 million ‘ARC’, aquatic recreation centre, on Saturday.
Attending the opening, Federal Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the ARC would support the thriving Gympie community by providing new swimming facilities and boosting the region’s economy through job creation.
Minister Nash staed “I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and modern recreational facilities are a big part of that.
“The aquatic centre encourages exercise and grassroots sport in the region, and could house the next batch of world-class swimmers!
“This project created more than 130 jobs during construction and a further 30 ongoing jobs at the centre, which is great for the region’s economy.”
The new facility includes an outdoor 50 metre, eight-lane pool for hosting regional swimming events, a 25 metre eight-lane heated indoor pool, a children’s play pool, dual waterslides, and a café.”
Mayor of Gympie Regional Council Mick Curran said he was pleased to see the Australian Government investing in the region, adding “this is fantastic facility that we are delivering for the Gympie Region which will not only be of great benefit to our residents but which will encourage visitation to our region.
“I congratulate the Federal Government on their support for this project as it allows opportunities for regional Australia to be more liveable and sustainable.”
This project was funded by the Gympie Regional Council (who contributed $17.2 million to the project) with an additional $5 million in Federal Government funding.
The facility is managed by Belgravia Leisure.
