YMCA NSW to manage Lakeside Leisure Centre in Canberra

The ACT Government has appointed YMCA NSW to manage the Lakeside Leisure Centre (LLC) in the southern Canberra suburb of Tuggeranong.

The recently refurbished centre will open its doors to swimming clubs today (Tuesday 1st September) and will reopen to the general public on Monday 7th September.

The YMCA NSW also manages Gungahlin Leisure Centre and is currently the interim operator at Canberra Olympic Pool in Civic.

Commenting on the appointment, ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury stated “the YMCA is a trusted community organisation in Canberra, and for a number of years they have consistently delivered a great service to customers in our city and throughout NSW “I am very pleased YMCA NSW has come on board as the operator for LLC, as their vast experience in pool and leisure facility management will ensure a smooth transition for pool users when LLC reopens next month following the completion of refurbishment works.”

YMCA NSW Chief Executive Leisa Hart said that the organisation values its partner relationship with the ACT Government and that it will aim to build a range of programs for the Canberra community to access.

Hart stated “the YMCA’s vision is to create happier, healthier, connected communities and we aim to do this by cultivating the happiness that comes from taking part in physical activity and being valued members of a community.

“A facility like LLC is a great community hub where we can facilitate this.”

Maintenance and refurbishment works at the facility have included retiling the pool concourse and renovating change room facilities.

Work has also commenced on a new outdoor water play park which is on track for completion in time for summer.

It is hoped that all facilities, including the cafe and creché will be fully operational by 14th September 2015.

All existing staff, up to the level of Operations Manager, employed at LLC prior to the refurbishment closure will be provided the opportunity to be involved in YMCA NSW’s initial recruitment process at LLC.
