YMCA puts fitness and aquatic information on to industry-first mobile website

The YMCA of Sydney has unveiled its first mobile website, giving its 60,000 members in NSW and the general public access to fitness and aquatic information at the click of a button.

The launch of the mobile site, which caters to a wide audience and can be accessed from any mobile device including mobile phones and tablets, is particularly significant being the first within the community recreation industry. The site is evidence of the YMCA's commitment to making it easy for people to schedule exercise into their busy lives.

The purpose-built site features the YMCA's 37 owned and managed aquatic and fitness Centres across NSW. In doing so, the site connect 'Y' members and the broader public across 17 local government areas, ensuring the YMCA remains the partner of choice for local councils.

One of the main features of the site is 'Find your local Y', making it quick and easy for people to locate their closest centre. Information on opening hours, fees, memberships, group fitness timetables, pool lane availability and programs will also be put into the hands of locals.

YMCA of Sydney Chief Executive Phillip Hare believes that the launch of the YMCA's first mobile website is a big step forward for the industry, stating "the Y is proud to be a leader in the community recreation space in NSW as we remain focused on family, healthy living, developing young people and those less fortunate, and the launch of the mobile site is further proof of this.

"The development and launch of the mobile website was both a response to the absence of mobile-friendly sites in the community recreation market and the growing number of people accessing our site from a mobile device."

In the six months to December 2011, more than 45,000 unique visitors accessed the YMCA's website from a mobile device, an increase of 150% on the previous six-month period. In December last year alone, there were almost 10,000 unique visits to the YMCA website from a mobile device, a 300% increase year-on-year.

Hare added "we are confident the mobile site will keep more locals engaged in the fitness and aquatic programs and services we offer in different communities, make it easier and faster for them to access information, and strengthen their sense of connection with the Y."
