World Cup of Golf to return to Melbourne in 2018
The PGA Tour has announced that the 2018 World Cup of Golf is to be held at Melbourne’s Metropolitan Golf Club from 21st to 28th November 2018.
The result of a collaboration between Visit Victoria, Golf Australia, the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia, Lagardere and the PGA Tour, the event will feature 28 two-person teams representing their respective countries.
The 59th edition of the World Cup of Golf will also mean that three consecutive world-class events - the Emirates Australian Open, the Melbourne World Cup of Golf, and the Australian PGA Championship – will be played in 2018.
Announcing the Melbourne event, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan advised “the World Cup of Golf has been a celebrated and valued tradition in the game for decades, and the International Federation of PGA Tours is proud to see that tradition continue in 2018 with the best players from around the globe convening at The Metropolitan Golf Club.
“Golf in the Sandbelt region speaks for itself, and we appreciate The Metropolitan Golf Club opening its doors for this historic team event.”
The Melbourne World Cup of Golf affords players one of the few opportunities to represent their country in an international competition, which continues to attract some of the best players in the world to compete in this unique event.
The 2018 Melbourne World Cup of Golf will mark the sixth time in the tournament’s history that it will be played in Australia, with the event last being held in Victoria in 2016, when it included 17 of the top 50 players in the world.
Commenting on the event’s tourism potential, Visit Victoria Chief Executive Peter Bingeman stated “our aspiration is for the Melbourne Sandbelt to become a bucket list destination for golf enthusiasts globally, and that’s why we are thrilled to once again partner with PGA TOUR to showcase Melbourne’s courses to the world. In 2016 we highlighted Kingston Heath, in 2018 we celebrate Metropolitan and in 2019 the Royal Melbourne Golf Club hosts the Presidents Cup.
“These three award-winning courses, together with the stunning fairways of Victoria, Commonwealth, Huntingdale, Yarra Yarra and Peninsula Golf Clubs, are within 90-minutes of Melbourne, allowing golfers to enjoy the fairways by day and the laneways, restaurants and bars of the city by night.”
Widely regarded as one of the finest championship courses in Australia, The Metropolitan Golf Club shares a common origin with The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 1891, and consistently enjoys a reputation as one of the best-conditioned and most beautiful courses in the country. The Metropolitan Golf Club’s rich tournament history includes the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play (2001), Men’s Australian Open, (1930, 1936, 1951, 1979, 1986, 1993, 1997), Australian PGA Championship (1930, 1936, 1951, 1966, 1968), Women’s Australian Open (2009) and the Australian Masters (2014).
