Port Hedland council to take back management of aquatic, recreation and fitness facilities

The Town of Port Hedland will manage Wanangkura Stadium, South Hedland Aquatic Centre and Gratwick Aquatic Centre from 1st July 2019.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on the 28th November, Council voted to not re-tender the facility management of the town’s leisure facilities, which has been under YMCA WA management since 2003.

The decision to transition to in-house facility management was based on the Town’s desire to be more hands on with the administration of leisure services in Hedland after many years of being under contract management.

Mayor Camilo Blanco emphasised the decision was not based on the performance of YMCA WA during the contract’s tenure, stating “first and foremost, I would like to thank YMCA WA for providing high quality and engaging leisure services to the Hedland community over the last decade.

“In no way is the contract’s expiry a negative reflection of YMCA WA’s capabilities as a contractor.

“We ultimately decided that now is the right time for the Town to utilise our in-house resources and expertise to drive the facilities into the next decade.

“Town staff will be empowered to further develop strong relationships with local sporting clubs and organisations due to more direct daily contact.

“I would like to assure users of these facilities that a smooth transition is our utmost priority, with as minimal disruptions to daily operations as possible.

“I can say with confidence that the Town’s Leisure and Facilities Team will work cooperatively with YMCA WA in the coming months to action a facility management and transition plan.

“We understand the uncertainty current YMCA WA staff are experiencing and will work with them to identify new and suitable employment opportunities with the Town in 2019.

“I look forward to this new beginning which will build on the high standard of service and leisure achieved by YMCA WA.”
