Staff training begins at South Hedland Aquatic Centre's LatiTube surf simulator

Staff training for the South Hedland Aquatic Centre's LatiTube surf simulation ride commenced last week, with 11 YMCA and Town of Port Hedland staff members on their way to becoming qualified LatiTube wave rider operators.

Staff will be spending the next 12 weeks undertaking further training, with operators needing up to 30 hours of operating experience to be qualified to run the machine and train other community members.

Now known as the 'BHP Billiton Wave Rider', BHP Billiton having made a major financial contribution to the $11 million upgrade of the South Hedland Aquatic Centre, training includes 'opening' and 'closing' the wave rider, as well as instructing others in surfing on the machine, and operating the console.

Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said community members may see YMCA and Town of Port Hedland staff members surfing on the machine as part of the training.

Mayor Howlett explained "the YMCA is planning a number of BHP Billiton Wave Rider community events prior to the reopening of the South Hedland Aquatic Centre, to give community members a special chance to trial the machine.

"More information on how community members can participate will be released in the coming weeks, and will be available on the Town of Port Hedland website and the Port Hedland Leisure website."
