New $9.55 million recreation centre for South Hedland

JD Hardie Recreation Centre in South Hedland, Western Australia is to receive a $9.55million upgrade from the Western Australian Government as part of its $1billion Pilbara Cities initiative.
Visiting the site, WA Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said that Broad Construction Services had been awarded the tender to upgrade the existing building which included additional offices, meeting rooms and a new multi-purpose space.
Minister Grylls explained that âthe design of the centre allows it to be used for a number of purposes and includes a Youth Zone which will provide offices for youth service providers.?
The $9.55million project has received $2.9million in Royalties for Regions funding, with additional funding provided from BHP Billiton Iron Ore, South Hedland New Living, Newcrest Mining and the Town of Port Hedland.
The Minister said the centre had received overwhelming support from residents including youth, government and non-government agencies.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said redeveloping the centre represented the most significant investment in youth facilities and services in the townâs history, stating that with the new Centre âthe South Hedland community will have access to one of the Stateâs best recreation venues.?
