Uncertain future for Shepparton's Fun City family entertainment centre
Uncertainty surrounds the Fun City family entertainment centre in the Victorian town of Shepparton, with the complex having closed as of last Friday and a sign on its door currently advising 'Fun City will be closed until further notice; apologies for any inconvenience'.
Business owner Darren Shaw advertised the business for sale at the beginning of January, with the notice listed by Australasian Leisure Management.
However, a Facebook post of the notice generated a considerable number of negative comments.
Comments included:
"They where not good management not by a long shot"
"Maybe If they didn’t underpay and where a lot more organised maybe just hate it could have worked, kind regards pissed ex employee"
"Maybe if they could pay their rent as well"
2017 had been a challenging year for Shaw’s Fun City FECs with the Shepparton facility suffering a robbery in June and its sister facility Fun City Sunshine being gutted by fire in May.
The robbery at Fun City Shepparton saw more than $1500 in cash stolen from the complex.
At the time, Victoria Police advised that an offender had broken in through the back door of the premises.
In May, overheated lithium battery operated torches that had been left charging overnight were blamed for a fire that gutted the Sunshine North facility.
Fun City Sunshine had closed in April as a result of what local newspaper the Star Weekly described as a “long-running dispute” with the landlord, coupled with surging energy prices.
While Shaw had fortunately removed expensive simulators rides after the closure, damage to the facility and its laser tag attraction, haunted house, go-kart arena and amenities was estimated to exceed $1 million dollars.
Following the fire, the Star Weekly reported that “Fun City owner Darren Shaw said he was disappointed rumours have spread that the fire was deliberately lit in the hope it would lead to an insurance claim."
