Sydney personal trainer to face Court on assault causing death charge

Jesse Allan, a personal trainer based on Sydney's Northern Beaches, is to face the Local Court at the Sydney Downing Centre on 5th November on a charge of Assault Causing Death.

Allan was first arrested following an alleged assault of a 37-year old man on the Manly Corso early in the morning of 27th January this year.

The victim, Matthew Williams, died in hospital on 6th February.

In the Manly Local Court on 9th February, NSW Police Prosecutor advised that 24-year-old Allan sought out the victim half an hour after an earlier altercation between the two.

He claimed CCTV footage showed Williams “covering his head in protection and the defendant then pushes him to the floor. The defendant approaches, Mr Williams stands back up and starts backing away from the defendant, the defendant approached Mr Williams, and Mr Williams placed his hand over his head for protection again. The defendant then pushes him with force causing him to fall backwards.”

Early reports suggested that Williams had fallen backwards and hit his head during the altercation.

NSW Police sought to have Allan’s bail revoked as they were concerned he was a flight risk given the “strength of the prosecution’s case”, the “inevitability of a custodial sentence” and family connections in the United Kingdom.

However, Magistrate Robyn Denes continued Allan’s conditional bail, first granted on 29th January, under which he must not leave home unless in the company of his mother or father. He also had to surrender his passports and abstain from taking alcohol or drugs.

A hearing on 10th September confirmed the Assault Causing Death charge with the matter now listed for Charge Certification (Committal) on 5th November.

Allan, a rugby union player who has competed in the NSW Shute Shield, is the son of former Fitness Australia Chairman David Allan.
