WorkSafe WA to investigate death at Perth 24/7 gym

WorkSafe WA has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 33-year-old man at a 24/7 gym in Perth.

Giuliano Pirone died in hospital after he spent 15 hours unconscious on the floor of a shower at Culture Fitness in Wanneroo in late August. He has been reported as having collapsed at about 7:30am on Tuesday 20th August. He lay there undetected until found him at 10:30pm that night.

Since the incident his family has been call for greater safety measures in gyms, gaining the support of Western Australian Premier Roger Cook.

Workplace safety regulator WorkSafe WA has now confirmed that it has launched a formal investigation after it was notified of the incident by the gym.

The body would not elaborate on the nature of its inquiry or if it has received any specific complaints, with a spokesperson stating that “it's actually too early to say what specific breaches are being investigated.

"The investigation is in its very early stages, so the inspectors are still gathering information about the industry."

Western Australian Police are now in possession of CCTV footage of the gym and are preparing a report for the Coroner.
