Shire of Roebourne approves plans for Karratha cultural precinct
The Shire of Roebourne has approved plans for a new theatre and arts centre in Karratha.
The Shire has had a concept plan drawn up for its $40 million Karratha cultural precinct, which is to be built on vacant land in the town centre.
It will include a 450-seat theatre, a new library, rooftop cinema, art gallery, amphitheatre and local history museum.
The Council expects work to begin by March next year.
Shire President Peter Long says theatre groups stopped coming to Karratha when the Walkington Theatre closed in 2011, explaining "when our Walkington became impossible to use, that whole process was interrupted because they just couldn't justify coming up the west coast.
"So when we come back in the game, so to speak, there'll be people travelling up the west coast. There won't be a problem with a lack of shows and there will be a lot more than you'd see now.
"It gives an extra dimension to the town instead of being a dormitory suburb for a mine.
"When we've got a theatre, we've got cultural activities and intellectual activities.
"It just gives us a whole new aspect to the shire and for people to live here. It just makes it a much better place to be."
