South Australian Sports Museum concept moves forward

The recent launch of the SA Sports Museum has been acclaimed as a significant milestone in a quest to honour the legacy of South Australia's heroic sporting heroes.

The permanent home for the SA Sport Hall of Fame and SA Sports Museum is getting closer in a journey which began in 2010 when Sport SA, The Advertiser and Channel Seven came together to recognise our South Australian sporting heritage and honour our champions. After the Celebration of South Australian Sport has been placed on the calendar for all to enjoy then sport needed a home on North Terrace alongside all the prominent buildings in the centre of Adelaide to truly capture the contribution of sport to SA.

The establishment of a Sports Museum is the next stage in ensuring that South Australia’s sporting history is profiled, featuring the KPMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame and ensuring that this is preserved for current and future generations. Greater appreciation of our success and achievements will be promoted in the exciting presentation of the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame with our heroes, legends and inductees showcased and celebrated. The SA Sports Museum will inspire visitors to enjoy their involvement in an active, healthy lifestyle through sport and recreation.

Commenting on the plan, Sport SA Chief Executive Jan Sutherland stated “the South Australian Government with Minister (for Sport Leon) Bignell driving the support of the SA Sports Museum has been great in generously providing the site and also support for the fit out.

“We are now seeking community and corporate support to bring the Museum to the next stage.

The Museum will be where we can recall the historic performances of the KPMG SA Sport Hall of Fame Inductees with their winning goals, great intercepts, shots or runs, while also highlighting the qualities that give them the ‘winning edge’.

“The current and next generations of sports stars, athletes in grassroots sports and the entire community will be inspired by their outstanding qualities and exceptional sporting prowess.”

Photographs, collections, interactive media, special exhibitions for sporting events and opportunities to meet your heroes sharing their stories will form the dynamic, contemporary, inspirational and educational exhibition. The support of business and all of our community will bring our fantastic sporting history to visitors, fans and all South Australians.
