SCG to host Major League Baseball's season openers

The Sydney Cricket Ground will host the richest array of sports stars ever assembled in Australia when the world famous Los Angeles Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks in two official Major League Baseball (MLB) season opening games on 22nd and 23rd March next year.

The clashes between the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks will open the 2014 MLB season.

The announcement comes a week after the SCG's 100th cricket Test match won the prestigious 2013 Stadium Business Awards Sports Event of the Year Award.

Over $US310 million of world baseball superstars will line-up when the two MLB National League Western Division rivals go head-to-head on the famous SCG.

The LA Dodgers team payroll for 2013 is estimated at over $US220 million with four players, Adrian Gonzales (first base), Zack Greinke (pitcher), Carl Crawford (left field) and Matt Kemp (centre field), each receiving salaries in excess of $US20 million per season.

Gonzales' salary of $US21,857,143 for the 2013 MLB season is greater than the combined annual salary caps of all teams in this year's AFL, NRL, Super Rugby and A-League competitions.

The LA Dodgers, six-time winners of MLB's World Series, are one of the world's top 10 richest sports teams valued at $US1.615 billion by Forbes Magazine, while the Diamondbacks are valued at almost $US584 million.
