Sandringham Family Leisure Centre re-opens to the community after implementation of alternative safety measures
Bayside City Council has advised of the reopening of its Sandringham Family Leisure Centre following its pre-Christmas closure due to the need to repair faulty firemain systems.
The closure, which saw the temporary suspension of access to Bluefit swimming pool and lessons, Southern Basketball Association four original courts and administration area, Goodlife Gym, physiotherapist, kindergarten and café resulted from the discovery of significant problems with the firemain sprinkler systems and extensive water damage from leaks.
As a result, the Council advised on 20th December “the closure is to ensure the safety of users of the building while faulty firemain systems are repaired. We are also working on interim solutions to enable us to reopen the building earlier if at all possible.
“The decision to close the building has not been taken lightly however the safety of the public and our tenants must be our highest priority.”
While initially predicting that the Centre would be closed until March, the facility reopened as of 3rd January as a result of implementation of alternative safety measures while the faulty firemain systems are repaired.
These works will require excavation of the front car park and adjacent areas.
Advising that “all tenancies are now able to operate as per normal”, the Council stated that “it acknowledges that the timing and notice of the closure was unfortunate and we sincerely apologise to impacted tenants and users for the inconvenience.”
The Centre’s four new basketball courts were not impacted by the closure.
