Life Saving Victoria to deliver updated Swim Teacher Training
Life Saving Victoria will begin delivering the new and improved LSV Swim Teacher course from January 2024, following the transition of the new training package.
After being the first training provider to introduce an online component of the Swim Teacher course, LSV remains committed to providing prospective Swim Teacher with the best possible start to their aquatics career as well as an improved pipeline of better prepared and better skilled industry workforce.
Following extensive industry engagement, and a full review of the course training and assessment materials, we’re pleased to announce that the new version of the course will be rolled out from January 2024. The updated course includes a continual focus on water safety, water familiarisation, teaching strategies and stroke development as well as a new emphasise on lesson planning.
NEW Skill Set SISSS00132 - Swimming and Water Safety Teacher
SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy, and mobility skills.
SISCAQU026 - Teach swimming strokes.
SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills.
SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues.
SISCAQU023 - Plan swimming lessons.
With the review now complete, there are three key changes, for the industry to be aware of. These changes have been made necessary by the content and assessment requirements which have been written into the training package.
•Change one - Qualification and license issuance
The requirement for the development of several lesson plans and the delivery of several swimming lessons to different cohorts, means that the scope of assessments can no longer be delivered in full during a one-day face-to-face training course. As a result, an on-the-job assessment portfolio has been developed. These assessment activities have been designed to contribute to the existing ‘on-boarding’ hours, to avoid creating delays in creating ‘industry ready’ Swim Teachers.
•Change two - LSV Workplace Supervisors introduced
The requirements for on-the-job assessment introduce the need for appropriate Workplace Supervisors to support, assist and mentor new Swim Teachers. LSV has developed and released an eLearning training resource to enable suitably experience members of the industry to become Workplace Supervisors. The process is freely available and is critical to support new Swim Teacher to complete their on-the-job assessment portfolio activities.
•Change three- Extension course pre-requisites
Swim Teachers who aspire to undertake extension courses (Infant/Toddler or People with Disability), will need to hold the new Swim Teacher Skill Set, as this has been introduced as a mandatory course pre-requisite. LSV is finalising the bridging activities so that those holding the previous skill set (SISS00112 or SISS00095) can complete the bridging, be issued with the new skill set, and subsequently attend the extension course/s of their choice.
