Redwoods Treewalk experience opens in Rotorua

Since opening before Christmas, the Redwoods Treewalk in the Whakarewarewa Forest near Rotorua has been attracting a growing number of visitors.

The first attraction of its kind in New Zealand, the Redwoods Treewalk consists of a series of 23 suspension bridges traversing the gaps between over 22 decks suspended up to 12 metres high among 100-year-old giant Redwood trees.

The walk is 553 metres long with bridge sections gradually inclining from 6 metres in height to 12 metres at its peak, and enables walkers to get a bird's eye view of the forest.

The Treewalk is the brainchild of Alex Schmid, who explained “it is an amazing interesting experience to see the forest from a bird’s eye view.

“You can walk next to the ferns and be surrounded by the giants.

"There's a different view of the majestic trees and maybe you can find some inspiration, or just enjoy the view.”

Schmid spent six years developing the Treewalk which uses environmentally friendly engineering with the series of suspension bridges and decks attached without screws or the need to create holes in the trees.

Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick welcomed the Treewalk when it opened, saying that the newest addition to Rotorua's tourism offering was a good example of "an opportunity recognised and moved on."
