Tree Top Walk continues to be a South-West tourism magnet

Western Australia's Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk has drawn more than 2.6 million visitors since it opened in 1996, with new facilities expected to bring even more tourists to the region.

WA Environment Minister Bill Marmion visited the walk yesterday (Wednesday 30th March) to see first-hand the State Government's ongoing investment into one of Western Australia's best loved nature-based tourism attractions.

Recent upgrades at the Tree Top Walk include a car park extension, new signage and re-surfacing of boardwalks.

During his visit Minister Marmion explained that "the Tree Top Walk is a great success story for tourism in this State and hosts about 150,000 visitors a year.

"The economic stimulus generated by visitors coming to the region to visit the Tree Top Walk continues to underpin local economies and future investment in the region. In addition, it creates the income to provide upgrades across other national parks in the region."

To continue to capture the imagination of visitors to the region and showcase some of the recognised biodiversity hotspots and spectacular natural environments in the Walpole Wilderness, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) developed the Walpole Wilderness Discovery Centre.

The centre comprises three sites across the region, including the Tree Top Walk, the award-winning Swarbrick Forest art walk and the Mt Frankland lookout.

A multi-million dollar upgrade is currently in progress at Mount Frankland with the recent completion of an arrival shelter - a gathering place for visitors when they arrive at the park.

Further work is being carried out on a 75 metre elevated steel walkway off little Mount Frankland, which will provide park visitors with uninterrupted views over core wilderness areas.

DEC is aiming to have the steel walkway completed by late 2011.
