Rebel partners AFL as Women’s competition debuts

Sports retailer Rebel Sport has agreed a new partnership with the AFL as the code’s new women’s competition kicks off.

Rebel has entered into a three-year partnership with the AFL and AFL Women’s national leagues, lending its commercial support to the inaugural AFL Women’s competition and collaborating on a marketing initiative to increase the profiles of its players.

Rebel will be also backing the AFL’s grassroots participation program Auskick and will provide discounts and benefits to registered AFL participants.

AFL General Manager Darren Birch welcomed the partnership, stating “we’re excited to add Rebel as an official partner of the AFL and AFLW competition for the next three years.

“The timing of this partnership is great, with AFLW set to begin in early next month.”

Winemaker Wolf Blass has also signed on as a partner of the AFL Women’s competition.

Tonight's historic AFL Women's opening match between Carlton and Collingwood saw a capacity crowd of 24,568 packed in to Melbourne’s Ikon Park with some turned away from the historic clash - which was free to attend.

The fixture also drew a national TV audience of 896,000, including 593,000 metropolitan free-to-air viewers, 180,000 regional free-to-air viewers and 123,000 on Fox Footy.

The opening round of AFL Women's continues on Saturday night with Adelaide taking on GWS and the Western Bulldogs up against Fremantle.
