Quayclean prepared to set new standards at Australian Open
With the Australian Open commencing yesterday, Quayclean’s workforce of 1200 cleaners are set to work ‘24/7’ throughout the 15-day tennis tournament to deliver an outstanding experience for more than 900,000 fans who will attend the event across the Melbourne & Olympic Park precinct.
As the chief provider of cleaning and waste management services to stadiums and public venues across Australia, Quayclean is determined to support Tennis Australia and M&OP to make this year’s tournament the most memorable and most environmentally friendly and sustainable event on record.
More than 750 Quayclean team members will be rostered every day of the tournament covering three separate shifts over a 24-hour period.
Last year, Quayclean managed and removed more than 38 tonnes of mixed recycling, 24 tonnes of kitchen organics, 37 tonnes of cardboard, and over 33 tonnes of crushed glass, and similar waste volumes are anticipated this year.
Quayclean’s team of 25 ‘Trash Talkers’, who assisted fans separate their waste into the appropriate designated bins, are back in force to actively help and educate spectators.
The Green My Plate service, where reusable plates and bowls are collected and hygienically washed and cleaned, is again available.
In a new initiative, Quayclean has established a dedicated sustainability team who will operate back-of-house to sort waste from five recycling waste hubs into six separate waste areas - food waste, co-mingle waste, reusable waste, soft plastics, polystyrene, and landfill.
With the Victorian Government introducing the Container Deposit Scheme last November, the team will be diligently separating bottles and cans from the co-mingle waste.
Quayclean Chief Executive, Mark Piwkowski advised “there have been months of planning with Tennis Australia and M&OP and other site stakeholders to ensure this year’s Open sets new environmental and sustainability benchmarks.
“Our goal is to supercharge the Open’s waste management and sustainability systems and divert the high majority of waste away from landfill which will represent financial and social benefits for the tournament organisers.”
Adding that his workers are excited to help deliver a memorable tournament for the fans, Piwkowski went on to say “our fantastic teams are highly experienced in working at major events, and they understand what is required to deliver a superior service. They have an exceptional work ethic and know how to be nimble and flexible while maintaining a good sense of humour.”
