Palm Beach Aquatic Centre more than three quarters completed
While the reopening of the Palm Beach Aquatic and Community Centre has been delayed until later in the year, the City of Gold Coast has given an update on how the revamped facility will look when building work is completed.
Under redevelopment for the past two years and originally scheduled to reopen mid-year, City of Gold Coast Chief Executive, Tim Baker advised this week “the Palm Beach Aquatic and Community Centre is now 76% complete with the current focus on the internal fit-out and upgrades to widen Thrower Drive.
“Unfortunately, we have experienced a further delay and the centre is now expected to reopen in spring 2024.”
With the improved facility set to offer upgraded pools and fitness facilities, it is expected to be an important community hub on the Gold Coast catering to the southern Gold Coast’s growing population.
Specific features of the upgrade will see it offer a larger warm water program and learn-to-swim pools, an upgraded gym and a new 25-meter heated outdoor pool.
A highlight of the revitalisation project is the addition of a much-needed community centre featuring a multifunctional hall, meeting rooms, a dance studio, creche and a new café.
Constructed between 1977 and 1981, the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre required refurbishment as it no longer met contemporary standards and compliance with upgrades essential to meet the growing demand from the community.
The new 25-metre pool is funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast.
